Political Leadership Training for Kohat, Kohistan & Lakki

Political Leadership Training for the youth of district Kohat, Kohistan and Lucky Marwat concluded successfully on June 12th, 2015. The training was held at the BKTEF Directorate from June 8th, 2015 to June 12th, 2015.  A total number of 30 participants attended the training. Resource Persons of the training were:

  1. Dr. Khadim Hussain
  2. Ms.Gulali Ismail
  3. Mr. Imran Khan
  4. Ms. Samira Shams

The first day started with MD Dr Khadim Hussain with introduction and a detail report on Baacha Khan Trust Educational Foundation. The objectives of the Foundation were explained briefly with training schedule. Later the stuff was introduced to participants and they introduced themselves in detail. The rules and regulations were set up with the consensus of the trainees and staff and were put to order. The session ended with tea break.

After tea break Mr Imran Khan conducted the “Leadership Skills” session. Before starting the session, he asked each individual about her/his expectations from session on Communication Skills. Each individual had different expectations.  After that, he started with the explanation of communications skills, its importance and advantages. Effective Communication skills were broadly explained with the idea of critical thinking and use of logic in speaking. Many activities with the usage of effective communication skills were performed. The session ended with lunch break.

An exercise was given to participants to give their feedback on some specific terms which are used a lot in daily routine. Session of Reasoning and Logical Fallacies was conducted and in the end the musical activity was performed to lighten up the environment.

The second day started with the brain storming activity for understanding the concept of politics. Dr Khadim Hussain asked each participant of its own understanding about leader and leadership. After that he explained the concept of leadership with its features and types. The session ended with the tea break.

After tea break, Dr. Khadim Hussain started the session with a brain storming exercise where the participants were asked to say what come to their mind on hearing the word ‘politics’. The knowledge of the participants about politics was very little and they were of the opinion that politics is game of power based on hypocrisy and self-interest. Dr. Khadim Hussain then discussed in detail the origin of the concept of state and then he threw light on the evolution of state till modern day state concept. He discussed philosophies of Aristotle, Rousseau's, Hobbes, John Lock and Karl Marx. He established that politics is the practice and theory of prevailing upon people on societal or individual level to promote political views to achieve certain goals i.e. economic, social, and cultural for the people concerned to empower them. The session ended with the lunch break.

After lunch break evening session started with Ms. Samira Shams lecture on “Human Development”. In the concept of development she based her session on the indigenous models of development as per described by the modern economists like Amartya Sen. She also explained Millennium Development Goals and analyzed goal wise status of Pakistan accordingly. The session ended with question and answers.

On third day Dr. Khadim hussain conducted a detail session on Khudai Khidmatgar Movement”. He explained that Khudai Khidmatgar movement was the first ever political endeavor in the history of Pashtun society. He added that the foundation of Khudai Khidmatgar movement was laid down in 1929 by Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan (Baacha Khan) as continuation of Anjumani Islahul Afaghana Khudai, and it inspired hundred of thousand Pushtuns to rally around Baacha Khan, and they started a nonviolent civilian resistance movement against the British rule in subcontinent. He further added that Khudai Khidmatgar movement galvanized Pushtun society towards achieving its political objectives. In the beginning, its objectives was to reform the attitudes and behaviors in Pashtun society but due to  changing global politics the movement took the shape of a political organization which struggled to get freedom from British rule and establish a progressive and democratic government of their own people. Dr. Khadim Hussain also stated that Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan, the leader of Khudai Khidmatgar movement, under a widespread ignorance in Pashtun society preached the doctrine of nonviolence in a very intimate,  simple and commonly understood language, and communicated a very simple message to live in love, peace and unity. This message was communicated throughout the Khudai Khidmatgar movement in a Pashtu magazine ‘Pukhtoon’ while using different genre of Pashtu literature i.e. fiction, poetry, and prose.  The session established that a non violent, secular, democratic struggle within the confinement of the constitution can only lead to prosperous and peaceful society. The session ended with video clip on life of Baacha Khan with lunch.

After lunch Ms. Samira conducted lecture on self realization and assessment with a name “winning from within”. She explained the four stages of self realization and how they help in establishing leadership quality in a person. At the end of lecture, she performed activity with the participants where they were divided in 3 groups explaining how to negotiate.

On the fourth day, Ms. Gulalai Ismail gave detail lecture on the “Evolution of Human Being” and the concept of “Sex and Gender”. Evolution of society and classes developed during different times were presented. The lecture included on how these classes were formed with factors that change the above mentioned classes and what were the forces to reform these changes.  After this, a video on human rights and 30 human rights of Universal Declaration of Human Rights was shown to the participants.


A detailed discussion took place on the condition of human rights in Pakistan with emphasis on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ms. Gulalai Ismail threw light on the violation of human rights in the wake of militancy and extremism. She also discussed the cultural and political barriers in the realization of human rights in Pakistan. In the end, the session established that there are 30 human rights which belong to each and every person irrespective of race, ethnicity, language, religion, creed, cast, and gender etc., and nobody need to apply for them, buy them or register for them. These rights coexist with responsibilities which must be fulfilled by every human being, which means to take care of the rights of others.


After the tea break, Ms. Gulalai delivered a detail lecture on “Women Rights”. In this session, problems of girls’ education, domestic violence against women, sexual harassment and other ever increasing discrimination due to lack of political will and deteriorated law and order situation in Pakistan were discussed in detail. An activity was performed by dividing participants in 5 groups. Each group was given 5 case studies related to women rights violation particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Participants had to identify what women rights were violated in each case study.  The session ended with agreement on not violating human rights and women rights in daily life.

On the last day, Dr. Khadim hussain took feedback from the participants. The last part of the session included certificate ceremony.

Each of the session was composed of interactive discussions, readings, group activities and documentary films. In the evening session, historical movies and documentary films related to the modules of the training were played and discussion was done afterwards.
